Rio Sucunduri, Amazonia - Brazil
Rio Sucunduri Camp

This operation is the brainchild of Brazil’s most prolific destination fishing guide, Rubinho de Almeida Prado. The Rio Sucunduri is very remote and the wrong side of a vast  indigenous Indian Reservation. The possibility of building a lodge was non existent, but how else open up this wonderful area to anglers?

Rubinho has come up with, not only a solution, but has created one of the most exciting fishing expeditions possible. The journey starts from Manaus, aboard a private aircharter as far as a very small town called Nova Olinda do Norte. From there, you board a traditional Amazon River Boat chartered by Rubinho for this expedition. The boat is charming and clean, offering the top deck for clients (covered with open sides) and the lower deck for the numerous support staff.

The boat travels upstream overnight, 10 to 15 hours, depending on river conditions, while you sleep off a delicious dinner in hammocks or on inflatable mattresses.

After breakfast and usual “tackling-up” frenzy, excellent two man aluminium fishing skiffs take pairs of anglers to start their fishing adventure. Meanwhile, the mother ship carries on further upstream to set up camp.

The camp is quite brilliantly organised. Single man tents pitched on vast tarpaulin with another as rain cover. They build two shower units as well as two lavatories with conventional loos.

Separate from the client accommodation, there is another area reserved for kitchen, laundry and sleeping area for the staff. The camp is cleaned every day, and is run like a lodge.

Breakfast and dinner are taken at the camp. Lunches are a magical experience in their own right. When it is time for a break, your guide will bank the boat in a suitable location and, before anything else, sets up your hammock in the shade of the forest. He will then hack down suitable branches, and construct a barbeque and a table. He will then grill fish you have caught that morning or meat brought in the cooler. All this is accompanied by fresh salad and vegetables. A snooze in the hammock then gets you ready for some more hard work in the afternoon.

The fishing is exceptional. One morning, my boat alone caught 78 fish before lunch.

I don’t think this is an ideal fly only destination, but suits mixed techniques. Some conditions suit spinning better, and also to ignore the huge catfish lurking in deep pockets would be a shame.

It is also worth mentioning that this trip offers the most fantastic value for money, especially bearing in mind that you will be in the most fantastically remote part of the Amazon Rainforest.

Safety is not ignored and the camp is equipped with Globosat phones and radios in case of emergency and air ambulances are never far away.

Season: Rubinho offers these trips from the beginning of October until mid November only.
